A bachelor of engineering in computer is a degree program that is meant to prepare students for positions in computer and information science fields. The programs are divided into two major strands: Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) and Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science (BACS). Both programs have earned the right to enroll in the nationally-recognized Computing Technology Excellence Program (CTEP), which has been acknowledged by employers as the benchmark for bachelor's degrees in information technology. Students must pass an accredited associate's degree, board certification, or a bachelor's degree from an accredited university before they can apply.
In addition to Bachelors of Science in Information Technology, students who earn a bachelor's of engineering in computer science can choose to take additional courses in areas beyond the traditional computer science curriculum. Typically, students will select three areas of specialization. These include computer theory, software engineering, and computer science. For the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, students will be expected to complete four additional courses, all related in some way to one of these four specializations. Students may also elect to take a specialized placement exam to show proof of their specific area of concentration.
The Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering is a four-year program. Unlike many bachelor's degrees, it does not require prerequisites to enroll. The only prerequisite for entering into the Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science is a first-choice course in a relevant area of engineering. Students in this program must also qualify to sit for the nationwide Certified Computer Engineer (CCE) examination. At the end of the four-year degree program, students will be able to sit for the CCE exam to become certified as an engineer.
Like many bachelor's degrees, a bachelor's of engineering in information systems requires at least a bachelor's degree. Students in this program must select a course of study that focuses on one of three concentrations within information systems. Systems must be reliable and robust, and must be accessible and effective. Students must also demonstrate their scientific reasoning and analytical skills. In order to be eligible for acceptance into this BES program, students must demonstrate that they are academically prepared to work in an IT department of some size.
There are four areas of concentration within the bachelor of engineering in computer science that students can choose to pursue. They are Computer Systems, Cybersecurity, Software Development, and Human-Computer Interaction. Each of these concentrations will require students to complete a series of elective courses, as well as upper-level courses, in preparation for their final bachelor's degree. Elective courses may be core requirements for a particular concentration, or elective courses may be elective for a combination of concentrations. Many students opt to pursue all four concentrations in order to fulfill their bachelor's degree requirements.
After graduation, students must pass the National Association for Colleges and Schools Computing Technology (NACIT) exam. This exam is nationally recognized as the standard by which all colleges and universities to judge the student's computational skills.
