Computer Science & Engineering is a comprehensive academic program in many colleges that includes both scientific and non-scientific aspects of computer hardware and software. CSE is also commonly referred to as information technology informatics or ITI. It is often thought of as a cross-disciplinary program because it combines computer science, engineering, and information technology.
There are four main areas of Computer Science & Engineering. The first area is what is sometimes referred to as computer-aided design or CAD. This curriculum focuses on developing computer-aided design or CAD templates that can be later turned into working designs by using actual computer hardware, software, and expertise. In addition, students learn how to analyze and evaluate the design of a project.
The second area of computer science engineering is known as computer-aided systems engineering. Software engineers implement specific computer programming languages and techniques to create efficient and safe computer systems. Software engineers also specialize in the design of networks, software, and hardware. They use algorithm designs to solve problems and often develop software that helps resolve problems in industries such as defense, medicine, aerospace, and healthcare.
The third area of computer science engineering addresses the business side of information systems. These fields include financial computing, supply chain management, health informatics, and information technology risk management. Information systems are complex systems that process large quantities of data and require expert training and skills. Graduates in these fields can expect to find jobs in areas such as financial planning, supply chains, health informatics, and information technology risk management.
The fourth area of computer science engineering addresses the application of computer science to real world problems. Examples include software product creation, real-time visualization for business and medicine, and developing information structures for managing enterprise information systems. These professionals often work on the ground floor of new technologies or research efforts. In real world settings, they are responsible for the creation of new data structures, such as XML files for communication. In a laboratory setting, they apply their skills to problem solving, developing new information structures, and testing the applications of existing ones.
Computer engineering also includes the field of computer science engineering. This is an advanced engineering degree program that is focused on applying theoretical computer programming languages to solve practical problems in industry, government, and the nonprofit sector. A Bachelor's degree in computer science engineering is a program of study that requires three years of graduate-level study. Graduates of this program are likely to be qualified to perform a variety of tasks within the computer programming industry.
