A Bachelor of Dance, usually abbreviated as B.D. B, A.M. and B.A., are usually an associate degree awarded by an accredited college, university or conservatory on completion of a program of study leading to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree.

An example of a B.D. course is dance therapy, which is a B.A. degree specializing in the study of dance. This degree is also accepted at the graduate level by most dance schools. There are a number of other courses that may be taken towards becoming a dance master, including dance design, dance performance studies, dance analysis, music education, psychology of dance, and technical dance training.

Becoming a dance instructor is not a simple endeavor. The responsibilities of such an individual are vast and often take-up over twenty years of specialization in order to achieve a title as a dance master. A dance instructor must be highly skilled in the many different disciplines involved in dance instruction and must possess the vision and discipline to instruct even a first-year student. Most instructors also have extensive experience of teaching young children and couples, and consequently command respect from their students. A dance master degree can be earned in any field of dance instruction. It is common for professionals to earn both a B.A. and a B.D.

A student who has completed the dance program of a conservatory or college is required to obtain certification before applying for positions as a dance master. Dance teachers must have a minimum of five years of dance experience. In order to qualify for this certification exam, an instructor must be taught for two years directly under the supervision of a master. It is not uncommon for a dance student to pass the exam with a B.A., but fail the next year to re-qualify as a dance teacher. After successfully completing a master's degree program and passing the certification exam, you will then be able to teach dance professionally in a studio or at a private school. The B.A. is usually awarded after three years of dance instruction, but some schools offer the B.D.

There are a few different positions that may be open in a dance school. The associate dance instructor is responsible for choreographed movements and the overall execution of the dance routine. The solo dance instructor is responsible for choreographed movements and arranging the group as a unit. The group leader is typically the one responsible for choreographed movements and choreographed routines in addition to the other dance instructor positions.
