Sarah Lawrence College is a small private liberal arts school in Yonkers, New York located about two and a half hours from Manhattan. The school models its approach to higher education after the traditional Oxford/ Cambridge model of one on one student-faculty lectures. In this system the instructor has complete control over what courses his or her students take, and how those courses are administered. With this system, professors and classmates interact more professionally and interact less casually with their fellow students. Many of the students found that they gained more respect and more skills from their professors when they participated in weekly class meetings and discussed academic issues.
At the heart of the college is the core liberal arts curriculum which, as its name indicates, studies a variety of disciplines related to the study of law. In recent years, however, Sarah Lawrence students have developed an appreciation for non-traditional methods of learning, including readings, movies, poetry, television shows, music and theater. These non-traditional methods have challenged traditional liberal arts assumptions about learning and have contributed to a growing group of “post-liberal” graduates who are open to new ways of learning.
Unlike other schools of law, which emphasize only the importance of the theories taught by professors, Sarah Lawrence students are more likely to be exposed to a variety of different cultures and lifestyles. In fact, according to some of the successful alumni of the school, the number one factor that distinguishes successful graduates from unsuccessful ones is the fact that many of the successful alumni attend concerts, clubs or other organizations whose themes appeal to a wide variety of people. This way of thinking about people and issues helps students in making more informed decisions.
Another characteristic that sets Sarah Lawrence apart from many other schools of law is its reliance on the services of current and former clients and litigants. As a part of their job, many attorneys at Sarah Lawrence College refer cases to outside experts who can advise them and provide additional information regarding the laws and legalities involved. The court system in Sarah Lawrence College operates under a very unique system. Many of the cases handled by the college's legal support services involve real world legalities that are applicable in many other settings. For example, many of the issues that arise at Sarah Lawrence involve questions about the meaning of contract, torts, commercial law, family law, trusts, and so forth. In addition, many of the cases do not involve complex scientific issues as most of the parties to such cases will be well aware of the answers to such questions.
The number one demographic that admires Sarah Lawrence and attracts many law school and Sarah Lawrence alumni into its orbit is the hipster. According to the administrators and graduate students at Sarah Lawrence, there are two types of people coming into the school that make the class seem appealing to everyone else but really appeal to the hipsters. The first set consists of people who come to the class because they want to be in a fun environment with interesting people. The second set of people come because they are majoring in the artsy major, in hopes of becoming a concert violin player, dancer, or actor. According to the administrators at Sarah Lawrence, the type of people coming into the class who are truly drawn to it are the former type. The problem with these folks is that they have a hard time relating to the dry, intellectual type of course . . . . . . work and thus they end up disengaging from the class much earlier than they should.
Another group of students who tend to come to Sarah Lawrence are those who dress in a manner that connotes a lifestyle that is considered to be somewhat out of the norm. These students tend to dress in very creative outfits, often including bold and bright colors, funky and odd patterns, and unique artwork on the apparel. These students will wear black clothes, but they will also wear many different pieces of clothing and accessories to create their own individual styles. This allows these students to express themselves artistically and to stand out from the crowd of students who are more in “safe” and traditional styles. It also makes the students appear extremely hipster-style, which can be a plus when you're trying to get into Sarah Lawrence College. So the next time you're trying to decide what to wear to your next Sarah Lawrence class, keep these things in mind and you should be fine.
