You can earn a Bachelors of Arts in Interior Design online from any accredited school or university of higher learning. The Bachelor's degree program is designed for students who have a passion for the interior design field. Interior design schools offer a variety of interior design programs to suit your schedule and your personal interests.
You will learn the creative and technical process, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills needed to produce functional, beautiful, and usable designs that meet strict safety, accessibility, and sustainable requirements. The Bachelor's degree program may also include a number of elective courses that are tailored to your specific area of study. These elective courses may include business courses or accounting courses. If you do not have a career lined up but want to pursue your own interior design career, these courses can give you the experience you need to start from scratch.
In order to complete your Bachelor's degree program, students must complete an approved curriculum that is approved by the American Council for Accreditation of Schools of Design. This curriculum is based on the standards and guidelines of the International Interior Design Alliance (IIDA) and the Commission for Interior Design Accreditation (CID). To ensure that students who earn their degree are knowledgeable about the state of the industry and are committed to the practice of design, employers will verify that students have earned their Bachelor's degree. After graduation, students are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) to become licensed as interior designers.
Before enrolling in an interior design school, you must take the NCLEX-PN as well as at least three credits of chemistry, English composition, and one credit each of history, math, computer science, statistics, art history, psychology, and biology. It is necessary that students complete at least 45 hours of coursework including both general education classes and courses that specialize in design. It is also important that students complete a portfolio review before they begin classes at an interior design school. A portfolio is an original document of your work that demonstrates your ability to complete projects based on your design education and training. Your portfolio will allow you to show employers your knowledge of current trends, styles, and materials used in interior design.
Once you are accepted into one of the many accredited interior design schools in the U.S., you should begin taking online courses that will prepare you for the job. The most common online classes include: drawing and painting, drafting, architectural drafting, graphic design, and more. Once you have completed these classes, students will then be able to choose from one of many different concentrations which include landscape architecture, design, interior architecture, or interior painting.
While many interior design courses will give you an overview of the history, materials, and principles of interior design, it is the skills and experience that students gain through their interior design courses that will determine their future success. Some of the skills that you may learn are: how to organize space, communicate effectively with clients and interior designers, use color, pattern, textures, light, floor coverings, cabinets, furniture, . . . . . . hardware, ceiling beams, lighting, wall patterns, floor covering, rugs, floorboards, windows, furniture, fabrics, carpets, and wall hangings.
