Nutrition courses are gaining in popularity for a number of reasons. It is now one of the main fields of study for a number of accredited programs. It is also a lucrative field as more institutions offer these courses to their students. In recent years, however, there has been a growing demand for professionals who have not only completed a four year degree in nutrition, but have taken a master's degree as well. While this is a good choice for those who are already in the field, it may not be enough to meet the requirements for a bachelor's degree in nutrition or even an advanced degree.
The first step that many nutritionists take, after earning their bachelor's degree, is to enter into an undergraduate program at a community college, or another similar program. Many students work on a part-time basis while attending school. They complete all coursework at their own pace. Once they graduate from a community college, they may choose to continue their education by enrolling in an online bachelor's or master's degree program. Some choose to pursue a doctorate in nutrition, which requires much more time and research than other programs. The highest level of education that a student may earn is a doctoral degree.
There are a number of different types of nutrition degree programs available to students. The first is an Associate of Science in nutrition, which typically takes two years to complete. Students must first complete all the general education requirements, which generally includes general studies, such as English, chemistry, biology, and physics. After that, they must choose a major, such as nutrition, from a list of associate degrees offered at the college.
The second is a Bachelor of Science in nutrition. This is a longer degree program and typically takes four years to complete. Unlike the associate degree program, nutritionists do not have to choose a major in their major. They simply choose any course they wish to take that fits in with their career goals in the nutrition field. Because of this lack of preset courses, many nutritionists opt for interdisciplinary studies, such as courses in health, human anatomy, pharmacology, biology, and nutrition.
There are also certificate and diploma programs available to nutritionists. These often take less time than the degree programs but also require similar skills and knowledge gained – including nutrition principles and application, dietary counseling, nutritional analysis, research methods, and administrative skills. Certificate programs are good options for people who are already employed but want to learn more about nutrition. Diploma programs are good for those who want to pursue a higher-level of education and are not yet eligible for some of the higher level jobs in the field.
Nutritionists should maintain a healthy body weight, eat a balanced diet, and be physically active. They should practice regular exercise and have realistic goals . . . . . . for their weight and eating habits. Being overweight or underweight has become very widespread today. Many health problems can be associated with improper eating habits, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and other serious medical conditions. A nutritionist can help clients overcome these difficulties and create a healthier lifestyle.
