Many people assume that an art major means they will be creating art for the “big screen.” That may have been true in the past but not any more. Today's art majors can focus on a variety of different media including computer-aided design (CAD) programs, digital painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. Students also have the option of working their way through the many different schools offering this degree. In fact, there are many art degrees offered at several different art universities around the country.

Students must learn about many different types of media including drawing, photography, film, television and computer-assisted design (CAD). They will be required to take general art classes as well as specific courses in their particular major. They will be expected to read widely and learn as much as possible about the various art mediums. A career as an art major opens up a wide range of opportunities for someone with this degree.

The first few years of an art major's life are very exciting and full of excitement. They will explore the history of art and how it relates to the visual arts. They will create original artwork and paintings while learning about various types of media. After completing their formal education they will need to decide if they want to continue their education and pursue a bachelor's degree or if they want to enter the professional world as an artist. If a student chooses to pursue their degree and become a teacher, they will need to complete a Master's degree as well as take additional art lessons.

There are many colleges and universities that offer art degrees; some are available at the college or university level and some are available online. For art majors who choose to get their degree at a college or university they will find that the tuition is usually higher than online programs since the extra academic work is required. However, students who get their degree from an online school typically find that the work load is less and the benefits of not having to leave the comfort of their home are great.

As an art major there are many options for a career after graduation. The typical path for art majors who eventually become teachers is to become a teacher in a private school or with a government agency. Depending on the area of art that the student is majoring in them may find that they are immediately qualified to teach elementary, middle school, and high school students. Art students can also choose to become art consultants, art therapists, art historians, and art conservation specialists. A student who is interested in becoming a teacher should check out all of the schools in their area and apply to the one that offers the best curriculum and pay. This will give them the best shot at landing the job that they have dreamed of.

A career in art is an exciting one that can lead to a number of different employment opportunities. Students can go on to be art majors who design websites for advertising firms, interior designers, art galleries, architects, and landscape contractors just to name a few. They could also decide to go into the business of art production where they would produce motion pictures, commercials, TV shows, and other types of visual art. Whatever the chosen career, the art major . . . . . . will have a number of different alternatives available to them after graduation.
