West Point Military Academy is a prestigious U.S. Military Academy. It was founded in Dedicated History and Tradition by General George S. Patton. The academy stands at the crossroads between the Eastern and the Western Military academies. In the year 2021, it received accreditation from both the U.S. Military Academy Commission and the U.S. Air Force Academy. The goal of the school is to train future military officers for leadership positions.
During their basic course, students get a total of five years of classroom education and two years of military, live training. All students are required to undergo the Basic Military Studies course as well as one to two years of officer candidate coursework that prepares them to join the Army, Navy or Marine Corps. After the training, students go through a rigorous physical and mental preparation to ensure that they are physically and mentally fit for combat. They have to survive rigorous training sessions lasting up to three days each week.
The cadets at West Point undergo extensive training in the field. The physical exercise regime includes strength training, aerobics training, swimming and core strength and stretching exercises. There is an intense and high-intensity aerobic program for both commissioned and non-commissioned officers. Non-commissioned officers go through rigorous swimming and endurance courses that test their athletic and mental aptitude. The cadets at the Academy also learn proper weapon use, combat strategy, and proper weapon maintenance and cleaning procedures. This training not only toughens the soldiers' minds but also provides them with excellent skills and abilities to operate in the battlefield.
Once the cadets complete their basic training, they will be awarded an array of prestigious awards. One award is the Meritorious Service medal. Another award is the Overseas Service medal. The awards provide a physical demonstration of the trainees' abilities in various situations. Students may be given additional awards based on their academic performance.
The live ammunition course prepares the students to handle live ammunition. The course includes live firing, target practice and shooting exercises. The course is supervised by some military professionals who live with the cadets for a few days. The live ammunition course can last from one to three days depending on the program. The course enables the cadets to safely handle live ammunition.
The NCOs or non-commissioned officers must pass the test for Basic Placement before being assigned to a specific NCO course. They will then be given a pouch with a specified number of live ammunition inside. The pouch is to be used by the cadet if he or she were to fire a shot at a target. The cadet has to ensure that the pouch does not shoot its contents out towards anyone else. If the pouch did, the contents would kill people.
